ChatGPT can now access up-to-date information.
The company has decided to work with the FTC. There were several reasons behind the previous limitation on ChatGPT's internet search capabilities, one of which was the cost of computing. It is commonly known that each individual query costs OpenAI a few cents. However, a more significant reason was the implementation of a valuable safety net through limited data access. By not searching the internet, ChatGPT prevented the regurgitation of harmful or illegal material that could have been newly uploaded. It also avoided the dissemination of misinformation planted by malicious individuals regarding politics or healthcare decisions. When asked about the delay in allowing users to access current information, ChatGPT provided three explanations. Firstly, the development of language models is a time-consuming and resource-intensive process. Secondly, using real-time data has the potential to introduce inaccuracies. Finally, there were privacy and ethical concerns regarding accessing real-time information, especially copyrighted content without permission. The introduction of these new functionalities by ChatGPT underscores the significant dilemma faced by the AI sector. In order for AI to be truly useful, the existing guardrails need to be lifted or, at the very least, loosened. However, such actions also increase the potential risks associated with the technology, making it more susceptible to misuse.
